FAQ
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DOING THIS FOR?
I’ve been photographing weddings since my second year of university in 2012 (during my photography degree). I started out by being asked to photograph a friend’s wedding and then a few friends of friends, as well as relatives and it all began to grow from there really.
WHAT KIND OF CAMERA DO YOU HAVE?
I shoot on my beloved Canon 5D. ark III and I always have a backup DSLR camera with me just in case! I work digitally and shoot RAW image files. For me, photography is all about light and literally translates to ‘painting with light’. I’m therefore drawn to natural ambient lighting and I try not to use my flashgun where possible, as I find this can be a bit obtrusive. I like to float around in the background and blend in with your guests to capture your special day in a natural and reportage style.
WHAT TIME WILL YOU ARRIVE?
I find it best to arrive 1-2 hours before you head off to your ceremony. That way you can get use to having me around with my camera and it helps me warm up and capture the first chapter of your day, ‘The Getting Ready.’ I find it also works best if you choose one of you for me to be with, unless you’re
both getting ready at the same venue or just down the road - that way I can photograph bits of both parties. It makes things a lot easier and less manic to know that I’ve not got to dash from one location to another too much.
HOW MANY IMAGES WILL I GET?
As you can imagine this can vary a bit and will depend on your special wedding day plans. I like to think of your day in little chapters and to capture images from each part, as your day unfolds to create the full story. On average I’d say approximately 500 individually edited images, as I like to go for quality over quantity. It’s crazy to think that before the world of digital cameras, a whole wedding day would have been captured on just two, maybe three rolls of 35mm film!
WHAT HAPPENS IF IT RAINS?
Living in rainy Britain means we always have to think about the weather taking the turn for the worst and I think it’s important to embrace the elements. When it rains it pours, so get your umbrellas at the ready and we will roll with it! I can guarantee when you look back at your special day in years to come the weather won’t be the first thing you think of – so don’t let it dampen your spirits. There’s usually a bit of time to dash outside between showers and get a few outdoor shots, even if it’s a bit wild and windy.
DO YOU PREFER COLOUR OR BLACK & WHITE?
During my editing time I sit with a nice cuppa (or five) and go through all your images individually to select the cream of the crop. I find some images do work best in B&W while others come to life in colour – I use my creative expertise to give you a mixture of the two. Again this can add some depth to your wedding day story.
DO YOU DO GROUP SHOTS?
Of course I can. If you want them!
It works best if you get your list of group shots sorted beforehand – one less thing to think about on the day. All families are different but I’d suggest whittling it down to about 8 different group shots, so they don’t take up all the fun times and I’d allow at least 30 minutes to round everybody up. (It always takes a bit longer than you think, especially when the fizz and canapés are out!) It’s helpful to have an usher, bridesmaid or relative on hand who knows all the people on the list and has a good voice. Some couples decide they’re not fussed with the organised group shots and prefer me to capture more natural relaxed shots of all their friends and family throughout the day – so it’s entirely up to you!
WHAT TIME DO YOU LEAVE?
This depends on your evening party plans but I tend to leave just after your first dance. We can always have a chat about this nearer your wedding date, when you know your timings of the day – that way it will be clear when I’ll be leaving. I’m usually around for 8-10 hours in total so it’s a long day on my feet. While I am an energetic runner bean, I need to be constantly alert throughout your day so I like to make sure we’re being realistic.
WHAT FUEL DO YOU RUN ON?
I do request a meal or pack lunch with a good glug of water. It’s best if I take a little break while you and your guests are eating, as nobody likes a shot with cabbage between their teeth. If there's room for me with the rest of your guests then I’m happy to join in at a table or I can find a quieter corner or corridor – it’s up to you. I find that it helps everyone relax if I'm sat amongst them so they realise that I'm not a scary camera-wielding thing that is on a mission to make them look bad. I’m not a veggie or vegan and not a fussy eater!
DO YOU WORK ALONE?
I do - it means that you get a focused view from a single perspective. I believe that it makes the story flow much more naturally and if I brought another photographer it might feel too much like a photo-shoot production and less like a wedding. Plus it makes the images you do have much more important.
If you’re having 120+ guests, then I do recommend having a second photographer on hand. This is to ensure that all the wedding antics can be captured which as you can imagine, this gets trickier for one photographer to do alone when there are a lot of different faces to capture.
ARE TRAVEL EXPENSES INCLUDED?
Yes. All my costs are included in the price within a 50 mile radius of Nottingham. If you're getting married further afield or abroad, then I can work out a bespoke wedding price for you, again all costs will be included in that.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE WEDDING?
Hangovers, honeymoons and happy times ahead! I usually do a quick edit on 5 select images of the highlights of your wedding and send them to you a few days after, so you can share them with your friends and family on Facebook/social media. It then takes me about 8 weeks to work on all of your images and produce a digital package uploaded to a USB stick which is all yours to keep. You will have both high-resolution images that you can print to your hearts content (I can always recommend printers) and low resolution watermarked images, which you can email and share online with your friends and family.
DO YOU DO ALBUMS?
I tend to find a lot of people prefer to make their own coffee table books rather than having a traditional style-wedding album hiding away in the back of a cupboard. I provide your wedding images at a high enough resolution to print so you're absolutely welcome to source your own album or book design and have complete control over that process, I just give you the images to make it with.
